Microphone placement

MessageAuthor

In the mix you usually want to seperately control the snare and kik so miking them is a must IMO. Then the 2 OHs need to be able to pick up the entire 'top' including the toms and cymbals and sound nice soloed in stereo. You have a floor tom so you might want to mic it using the 5th or find some other focal point you choose. I have recorded drums with as few as 3 mics, but often find I need to add samples to make it happen.

RE: Microphone placement

I record with 5 mics often. What sort of music is it?

RE: Microphone placement

You can definitely get good results w 5 mics if you have a good drummer playing a good sounding kit in a good sounding room. The idea of using the same mic for snare and hat is probably not a good one, unless the style is jazz, because you usually need very different EQ for the two. Plus, snare usually needs a kind and amount of verb that would turn the hats into a washy, noisy mush. Let the OHs pick up the hat, and just make sure the drummer plays it at the level you want in the final mix (although you can adjust it some with EQ). If you need the toms to be really present, then you may need to sample each tom with a close mic at the end of each song (several samples per tom at different strengths), and spot those samples in later. Not ideal, but it gets the job done. You need separate samples for each song, though, because the tuning will drift from song to song.

Or how about this: track the drums while everyone else just plays along, monitoring them thru the mixer but not thru PTLE. Then overdub everyone else over the drums.
