v70 low speed cut out

MessageAuthor

As a new v70 owner (but its my 3rd Volvo so I do like them!) this wet weather seems to have upset my recent acquisition. Its a 2.4 170bhp auto and when pulling onto a motorway slip road in heavy traffic (and rain - anyone noticed it?) the engine just cut out. I'd say we were at 15mph and I've noticed the revs go really low in this car, below 500 which I've never seen in previous models. I think the car needs a full service (its high miler - 4yrs and 75,000) the (non volvo) dealer just did basic fluids/filters for the "sales" service, so I guess its due. And while I'm at it should I get the cam belt changed early for peace of mind? Or are they really good enough for 90k? Any advice appreciated.

RE: v70 low speed cut out

Your issue could be the ETM, have a look under the appropriately named section for symptoms that may ring bells. Volvo UK will be able to tell you if the recall (free check/software update as they call it) has been done. TBH, if you're getting the car in for a big service, get the cambelt done. I'm sure Volvo recommend a change at 80K but I'm happy to be corrected!

RE: v70 low speed cut out

Many thanks for this. I've read the bit on the ETM (very scary, wish I'd seen that before I bought the car!) but this suggests the pre 2002 models are mostly affected ( )mine is a 2003 so before i go that route I think I'll see what a service does for the car. I've not had any rough running or lumpy idling or anything like that, just that in some low speed situations the revs go very low, ie when in traffic with no throttle pressure at all. Its also a lot thirstier than my previous 20v 2.0 850 auto estate was. That car really improved after a decent service. I think the cam belt will be changed, what sort of cost is this likely to be? Also I used to use a good independent garage, do they have to have volvo computer diagnostics to do a decent service or am I blessed with main dealer prices? I have to say this site is a real mine of information, its going t oabsorb a lot of my time reading this stuff! if I'm allowed by the boss that is!
